I've always been driven by a single question: why?
Why do we choose the interests, partners, hobbies, jobs, and social relationships that we do? Why does one person self-soothe with a bubble bath and tea while another turns to a bottle of tequila and compulsive dating? Why does one behavior feel like a choice and the other a compulsion?
As a Licensed Independent Clinical Associate Social Worker and Substance Use Disorder Professional Trainee, I believe that we are all doing our best with the tools we have to achieve equilibrium. Some of us were given better tools than others, but regardless, we're all seeking balance in our lives.
My own journey with maladaptive coping skills has instilled in me a deep sense of compassion and empathy. I understand that while certain behaviors may wreak havoc, they often mask deeper wounds that need attention. As Dr. Gabor Maté eloquently states, "To understand people's pain, you have to understand their lives. In other words, addiction is a normal response to trauma." This perspective guides my therapeutic work, where I aim to help clients not just address and change harmful behaviors but also to heal and unburden themselves from the underlying pain.
Many clients come to me burdened with shame and guilt. Together, we move beyond the addiction or behavior to uncover the root cause, fostering self-awareness, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose. My therapeutic approach integrates evidence-based practices such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment Theory, and Mindfulness.
I have a strong background in community mental health, having worked with diverse populations, including those struggling with substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and co-occurring mental health conditions. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and completed my Master of Social Work in the advanced standing program at the University of New England.
Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending time with my pups, hiking, and competing in kettlebell lifting.
